Lisa Antrobus met her husband David Ker in Johannesburg. But they immediately knew where they’d get married: the Karoo.
Lisa was born and bred in Cradock, while Dave is a city boy.
Lisa and Dave, of the Tuishuise and Victoria Manor, are now part of a wide circle of people in Cradock arranging weddings.
“I think the secret to happy weddings in the Karoo is in the peace of it,” says Lisa. “People can really relax here. You don’t have to drive far, there are babysitting facilities, everything can be organised here. You can spend a weekend partying with your favourite people for practically the same price as a small formal wedding in a city.”
Being a wedding photographer out in the country means being prepared for anything.
Ryno Ferreira (born in Middelburg, living in Cradock) typically carries a little emergency kit. It includes hairclips (for fly-away hair), headache tablets, earbuds (for running mascara), safety pins (for wardrobe malfunctions), superglue (for broken stiletto heels) and peppermints (for fresh breath).
Also, he can find a likely background in a flash – he knows all the photogenic ruins and pretty windmills and scenic dirt roads.
“I love it that for a brief time you feel part of that family. You get to know that this tannie traveled far to be here, that it’s really special when Ouma gets up to dance. You get to know what makes them laugh (especially the bride, because she must be smiling the whole day).
“And I love taking pictures in the Karoo. The light is so clear and late in the day, the colours are so intense.”
Ryno is married to Lucille, one of the top beauty therapists in the Eastern Cape..
At the Karoo Comfort Zone, she gives the bride a relaxing massage plus a body polish the day before (it’s become a popular gift for bridesmaids to give a bride). And on the big day, she’s there to do the makeup.
Lucille often works together with hairdresser Carozel Ferreira (no relation), and if you’re imagining a scene straight out of Steel Magnolias, you’re not too far wrong.
Cradock and Middelburg both have excellent caterers and a growing number of venues.
